HOW TRICKERS BOOTS ARE MADE
The Tricker's Stow Country Boot has become the 'hero' boot: the bestseller and perhaps the most influential model. It deserves a place in every gentleman's footwear collection. First debuting in 1939 and with roots stretching back to the 19th century, the Stow is the pre-eminent country boot: hard wearing yet elegant, beautiful whether it’s fresh out of the box or with a decade (or two) of wear, and decorated with broguing that’s both functionally water repellent and simply an aesthetic delight.
To showcase how this genre-defining boot is made in Northampton, Nick from Stridewise visited the Tricker’s factory. Follow the journey of a Stow boot from selecting the iconic Acorn leather, steaming the uppers in the mulling room, the gold standard Goodyear welting, all the way to the finishing room.
Along the way, Nick also chats with some of Tricker’s esteemed workers, from Stephen — enjoying his 48th year at Tricker’s — to newcomer and apprentice Callum, who hopes to build his skills and work in the bespoke department.
Trickers’ Sales Director David Jeffery leads the tour, breaking down the high-level craftsmanship and revealing the unusual elements that make Tricker’s process stand out even among other luxury footwear brands.
“We are super proud of what we do in this factory,” says Jeffery. “The staff that we have, the skills that go into making a pair of shoes. We have people who have gone to school in Eton and when they go to their first job, whatever that may be, it’s almost a rite of passage that their father will take them to Jermyn Street, where our shop is in London, (where) you’ll have your first pair of shoes. You’ve come of age.”
The Stow boot is available in four leathers here , but be sure to check out the kudu leather versions and seasonal lightweight Stow boot .
